pumpkins

This unusually warm October we are having is wreaking havoc on our jack o' lanterns. I found them yesterday oozing pumpkin juice all over the place.

And I found this inside of Aaron's pumpkin. It looks like a squirrel crawled in there and died.

Ugghh.

  2. I have heard that you can spray the inside with a mild bleach/water solution in a spray bottle to prevent mold........haven't tried it yet.

  3. Yeah, welcome to the world of warm weather Halloween. Here in the south I can't carve my pumpkin until Halloween, and it usually starts collapsing in on itself just a day or two later.

  4. Loving the pumpkins!!
Although there does appear to be something nasty growing in one of them! Your mention of a squirrel did make me chuckle :o)

  6. I think the mold adds to the atmosphere.

  7. Here in the desert we carve pumpkins on Halloween, and they're wilty and wrinkly by morning. I once tried rubbing the cut bits and the inside with Vaseline - it was supposed to keep away rot, but that didn't work.

  8. I know it's frustrating to have them fall apart like that (I haven't even bought any pumpkins due to this weather and probably won't bother this year), but man, the pumpkin goo combined with the expressions you guys carved into them makes for a hilariously tragic vignette. The pumpkins look like they're silently screaming, and I love it.

  9. oh bummer about the mold! We end up carving on the 30th every year b/c our pumpkins tend to get the 'disease' very quickly. =( But hopefully you still had fun with it.

  10. I learned that the hard way. The first year we moved to NC, our beautifully carved pumpkin rotted in about 2 days (no disgusting hair though!! ew!! ... in NY we could carve pumpkins weeks before, but down here you seriously have to do it the night before! Unless you keep the carved pumpkin in the fridge, LOL. :)

  11. I did think you were carving them too early, but I forgot that there's a temperature difference. We can't carve ours until the day before. I'm going to push it anyway and carve them on Sunday afternoon.

Some site somewhere did a comparison test of all the folk remedies and products designed to keep jack o'lanterns, but found there wasn't much difference between the products. I can't remember where I saw it, though.
