The smallest, quietest member of our household passed away. Torty died sometime last night.
I don't know what happened... we did notice recently he wasn't eating as much and sleeping more, but it wasn't enough to be alarmed at. It is hard to tell what a tortoise is thinking.
This morning, after giving Ernie some fresh water, I was giving Torty some lettuce when I noticed he was gone.
It wasn't supposed to happen like this... he was twenty years old, tops. Russian Tortoises are said to live to be 100. We used to joke how we would have him when we were old and grey.
I am going through the guilt thing... I should have taken him to the vet when he seemed off, I should have taken him outside more, taken more pictures of him...
Uggh... it's just horrible.
I am so sorry for your loss. I am sure Torty had a happy life with your family.

ReplyDeleteIt is always hard to know how pets are truly doing because they can't say "hey! I don't feel good!" And pets like Torty.
Sometimes it is just a pets time, even if it seems too soon.

Sorry to hear this news Jenny. It really hurts to lose a pet (and a member of the family).
ReplyDeleteoh, that makes me so sad. :`(
ReplyDeleteI know that he was probably the happiest turtle in the world with you two. All animals feel love, even if it's just an understanding of safety and security.
I've always said with my many kitties throughout the years, and who I let go outside, it's better to have a short life filled with love and adventure, than a long one with nothing much to do. He had as full a life as a turtle should. :)
I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry for your loss...
ReplyDeleteI'll bet tortoise heaven is awesome! Right now, he's at the all you can eat leafy green veggie buffet and I'm sure there are more fine lady torts than he can shake a stick at!
ReplyDeleteHe had a great 20 year adventure with you and you were both very lucky to have each other!
It will hurt less soon.
Sarah
I'm so sorry :-< It wasn't your fault...it's too easy to say shoulda, woulda, coulda. It was his time and you were a good mom. RIP Torty!!
ReplyDeleteSorry for Torty's leaving so soon. Don't feel badly, sometimes these things just happen, no matter what you could have done.
ReplyDeleteTime will ease these feelings a bit.
are you sure he's not just hibernating?
ReplyDeleteI'm very, very sorry for your loss, Jenny and Aaron! I'm sure it will be empty without Torty...
ReplyDelete(And "Lauren"?? :D )
