I don't like to be a complainer, but I had a strange experience with my cereal this morning. I saw this new Special K with fruit and yogurt last time I was at the grocery store. I saw the berries on the box and thought "Yum! Berries!"
This morning Aaron was reading the ingredients when I noted how I didn't get very many berry clusters in my bowl. He replied "There are no berries in this cereal." True enough... after examining the ingredients, the berries are actually made up of apples dyed red.
I guess it's my fault because nowhere on the box does it actually say that there are berries inside. There are "fruit clusters", "lively berry flavor" and the "sweet taste of berries", but no actually claims of berries.
Those berries looked darn good too.
That whole ingredient list kinda freaks me out. Sugar, high fructose corn syrup, molasses, corn syrup, confectioner's glaze & corn syrup solids? Holy sugar rush, Batman!
ReplyDeleteSpecial K Red Berries has dried strawberry slices in it!
ReplyDeleteyou'd think that they shouldn't be allowed to put pictures of berries on the product if there are no berries in it. Still sounds like false advertising to me, even if they don't say anywhere that there are berries in it. Dodgy!
ReplyDeleteI say, if a company makes me think that much early in the morning, they don't deserve for me to buy their products. Dodgy is a good word! What say you? Lets start an email campaign! ... Nevermind, I'm going to bed. See, that's why I'm not an activist, but I surely won't be buying it anytime soon.
ReplyDeletethat's why you should eat Oreo's for breakfast...dunk 'em in milk...breakfast of champions...
ReplyDeletedeodand - Yeah... I can deal with the sugar part... I am a sugar freak as you can tell from my cupcake post, but the corn syrup? That is evil.
ReplyDelete*Berries not included.
ReplyDeletei thought cold pizza and a pepsi is the breakfast of champions?!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure all this sort of stuff is VERY heavily guidelined, as to what you can say and what you can't. This is going as close to the line as I've ever seen! I'm actually kind of impressed ... reluctant, but impressed ...
ReplyDeleteWith the looks of those chocolate cupcakes, sweetie... I doubt it matters much if the berries are really in your cereal. :) You are very thin! I am a wanna-be health-nut (as soon as I finish this box of Mexican Wedding Cookies from Texas that I brought back from vacation). We try and avoid anything with refined, artificial, or hydrogenated ingredients. That leaves out pretty much... everything. If you read how they create WHITE flour, you would be a wanna-be health-nut, too!
ReplyDeletethat is just wrong!!
ReplyDeleteHow dare they.
Actually, I believe that the little blueberries in bagels are actually dehydrated, food-colored apple bits too.
ReplyDeleteWow. That's weird. I looked for it at the grocery store this weekend but I don't think that particular sort of cereal we have in Quebec. In any case, I am also very shocked by Kellogs having put pictures of berries on the box, it just looks wrong considering there are none.
ReplyDeleteDoes it actually taste like berries?
All the "artificial artificial artificial" looks kinda chemical to me :P
