When I got to Starbucks for Sit & Knit this evening I was happy to see they were bringing back some green tea drinks. They definitely had a green theme going on... leaves printed with tea facts and other springy items.

Once I sat down, we noticed packs of cards sitting on tables. They had strange words on them. So did the cup sleeves. Turns out it's a promotion for a movie coming out called akeelah and the bee. I am not surprised... Starbucks has been successful at promoting music... why not movies?

So the movie is about a "precocious eleven-year-old girl with a gift for spelling" that goes on to the national spelling bee. What is it with spelling bee movies? Last year it was Bee Season. Before that it was Spellbound. For me... the thought of standing in front of hundreds of people and having to spell autochthonous... these movies should fall in the horror genre.

  1. if you get a chance, I will also recommend the spelling bee musical on Broadway in NYC right now...it's incredible and hilarious! www.spellingbeethemusical.com

It also contains the first Korean-American character written for Broadway, her name is Marcy Park.

  2. This makes my day! I was so sad to see the green tea drinks go at the end of the season last year.

  3. Word to the wise: Stay far, far away from the Green Tea Latte. The first few sips taste okay, but it's pretty horrible. My local Starbucks didn't even make me pay for mine because of how bad it is. One of the barista's said that he'd rather drink sewer water.

  4. I was in a spelling bee in elementary school. Probably not hundreds of people, but I made it to the round where kids from other schools came in. I really didn't have an interest in memorizing (sorry "learning") all of the words on the list, so I didn't win, but I think I stuck in til pretty close to the end, as I remember. Definitely surreal....

  9. I was *so* excited to get Starbucks' e-mail about their new green tea drinks! Unfortunately, I'm pregnant and can't have green tea right now. :( I'll have to live vicariously through everyone else! *sigh*
