I saw a car in my office parking lot with these bumper stickers. I can honestly say that I did not think there were still Quaker's kicking around. I stand corrected.

  1. My husband's buddy's girlfriend has Quakers in her family. Her cousin was married in a Quaker ceremony.

  2. Maybe you were thinking of Shakers? The community that made a lot of furniture? There are very few of them.

There are lots of Quakers. In most cities there are Quaker meeting houses and at every university I've attended there have been Quaker groups.

  3. Quakers are pretty widespread, still. They don't dress differently and don't act that much differently (aside from the commitment to pacifism) than "ordinary folks."

Shakers, not so much. But that's probably partly because one of the tenets of Shakerism was celibacy - so no new members born into the community. (There was a minor boom in the 1930s when the remaining Shakers took in folks left homeless by the Great Depression.)

  4. There's a pretty high amount of Quakers living in Florida. In the five different states I've lived in, I've never heard about, and read about Quakers as much as I did while living in Florida.

Also, the recent Bush "spying" thing had something to do with spying on some anti-war Quakers in Florida. (I don't need this to turn political thing, if anyone is reading this, btw. Bleh.)

There are Amish living in many states, of course...but there are a good amount of Amish communities in Florida, too. We had an Amish community right in the middle of our town of 40,000.

No one could ever tell me why so many came to settle in Florida. It would be interesting to know.

  5. LOL! I am such a dork! I couldn't understand this post since I was reading "Quackers" instead of "Quakers". Makes sense now.

  6. We're Quaker :) We get that all the time - Quakers are still around? *grin* Our meeting for worship is an hour of silence, with people standing, when moved, to speak, hence that second bumper sticker.

  7. i'm a quaker as well. there are various forms of the quaker denomination in the united states as well as in the UK. not all quakers attend a meeting house but in a church. this is how we meet and there are things in our service we do which still holds to what quakers have always believed such as a time for silence, the way we hold business meetings, and our pacifist views. nice to see some comments on quakers and what people know of them or confusions they might have.
