Not everything I do comes out the way I would like. Take Aaron's birthday cake for instance. A combination of pouring too much batter into the pan and not properly sticking it with the special cake poker thingy, resulted in a cake with a soggy middle. So I cut it out and stuck a mini cake on top. Tina called it a sombrero cake.

I feel slightly guilty that Oscar's cake looked so much better than my husbands. (side note: I LOVE my cake stand! A cake stand can make even a funky looking cake look good!)

  1. Oh Jenny - the more we love someone, the more likely we are to have stuff like that happen. My experience anyway. I know you love Oscar (as we did ours) - but that's your new husband there.

Once my mom sat a stack of dirty dishes on top of my toddler son's birthday cakes. I scraped the tops off and assembled an awesome drum set anyway. He loved it.

I bet it tasted great and that's all that really matters.

  4. I totally agree about the cake stand. I have one made of clear yellow glass and it elevates any baked good (cake, brownies, cookies) to glory status! Now I feel like baking something today -

  5. Same thing happened to me in July for my husband's birthday cake. I took on a way-too-hard meringue sorbet layered cake from Martha Stewart. It was very hot so the sorbet melted as I was layering, the meringues didn't come out right...but he was still appreciative :) I'm sure your cake was appreciated too!!!! :)

  9. Dear Anonymous 4:45 pm (obviously too rude to own up to your comments)... first off, Jenny is a lot closer to perfect than most and that's because she puts alot of effort, thoughtfulness, generosity and kindness into everything she does!

If you don't like the fact that she posts about consumer products (not all of which she buys - but even if she does, more power to her), then how about not reading her blog!
