Feast your eyes upon the horror that is my shower shelf. After a few months a rusty shaving cream can has left its insiduous mark. Now tell me, why must shaving cream come in a receptical bound to deteriorate in the very envirionment in which it is used? It would be like driving a cracker car through a parrot house. At the store, I scoured the shelves of shaving cream only to find... CANS! ALL CANS! RUST PRONE CANS!

Imagine my joy when I found Alba Botanica moisturizing cream shave while in Canada. It comes in a plastic tube!Brilliant! And there are pleasing scents like Mango Vanilla and Coconut Lime to choose from. Alba is based in California, so why I had to go to another country to find it is beyond me, but I am as happy as a clam.

  1. I buy all of my Alba products from natural food stores. I've bought them at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, as well as body care aisles in the natural foods section of a couple of chain grocery stores. I loooove the stuff!

  2. I use Method's daily shower spray cleaner. My shaving cream can also leaves rust marks. But I just spray it with Method and wipe it off.

  3. Wegmans Pittsford has some of the Alba products in the Nature's Marketplace. I have been using Alba Green Tea Hawaiian sunscreen all summer and it is non-greasy and smells wonderful.

  4. you know, when you start to think about it, it really is a stupid idea that they're metal. Its the same with all the gillette women's products for leg-shaving. we have to put them up on the window sill, which is wooden. It still leaves a mark but it's less obvious. Surely there have to be more non-metal shaving creams around?

  5. You should be able to remove the ugly rings by using a product called CLR (Calcium Lime Rust). It comes in a silver tone bottle that looks like an antifreeze jug only much, much smaller. Pour or sponge some on, let it sit a while & bubble, then scrub & rinse. Wah-lah!

I've become enamored of Kiss My Face brand's Moisture Shave. While I know several people who like the Key Lime, at our house we like the Mint one. I'm not sure of the exact name of the "flavor", because my 20 y/o son has stolen the bottle and taken it downstairs. Wonder who's Kissin' His Face? ;) The KMF products come in a plastic (NO RINGS) pump container and can be found in lots of outlets such as Fred Meyer, GNC, and other places where you can find natural / organic products.

    Good luck! Weasel

  6. Try the Trader Joe's shaving "cream" - the mango vanilla is exactly like Alba, but a bit cheaper. The packaging is almost identical.

    Happy shaving!

  7. Alas... we do not have Trader Joes anywhere near here. I will check the Natures Market section of Weggies though.

  8. Another great one is True Blue Spa's "Shave the Day" shaving cream from Bath & Body Works. Comes in a plastic pump bottle, and is loading with moisturizing shea butter. Good stuff!

  10. Mr. Clean Magic Sponge! Don't scrub and scrub with it, though.

  12. I always just flip the can and store it on the plastic top - no mess. But - I like the idea of having an excuse to splurge on the fancy stuff too!

  14. I tried the Alba Coconut Lime and was disappointed in it. It would still get razor burn due to dry skin. I use the Aveeno (www.aveeno.com) body wash and it lathers up quite nicely if you don't use add much water. My legs are the softest ever when I get out of the shower and I can even skip mousturizing if I want. The scent is nice but not overwhelming. I buy it, of course, at Target.

  15. Alba Botanica shaving creams are also sold at the Abundance Coop on Marshall St. (off Monroe) in Rochester.

  16. For the rust rings try Barkeeper's Friend (comes in a can like Comet). I've seen it at Target as well as Williams-Sonoma. It saved my bathroom counter when a can of Lysol left its mark.

I know that Whole Foods carries Alba if you have one of those near you.

  18. How strange you can't find shaving cream in plastic containers (I've also had the rust problem). Do you look on the chick side? There are several brands about anywhere (walmart, target, even big lots). I also use the foamy pump thing with slightly less watered down liquid soap to shave with. It's pretty cheap and works pretty well.

  19. I use the Aveeno shaving cream in a (stupid metal) can and I just invert it when I set it down -- you know, I store it upside down, resting on the blue plastic cap. No rings! Fluffy gel-foam! Fun compression-spray! No worries! -- Heather (www.littlecabbage.com)

  21. First of all, I love your site!

I recently read of a trick to prevent rust stains from forming at the bottom of shaving cream cans. Just paint a coat around the rim with some clear nail polish. Also Gillette Foamy Shaving Cream supposedly has a rust-resistant can. See below.

    Hope this helps!

  22. I found a great product to get rid of these rust stains.

    Check out www.norustring.com

I bought a couple (they are only 2 bucks) and wondered if it would work. Works like a charm. No more rust stains at all
