If there was one thing I would like in Rochester, it would be a Drive In Theatre that was a little closer. I have a lot of memories of bouncing around in the back seat of my parents Chevy Nova at the Sunset Drive In Theatre... waiting for the "Let's go out the kitchen" song to end and the movie to begin. Once my Uncle took me there to see Jaws 3D in his brand new Trans Am. I thought I was so cool.
I have been reading about Guerilla Drive In Theatres. You sneak around with a projector 'til you find a blank wall and show the film on the fly. If anyone ever hears of one in Rochester... let me know!
That is THE coolest thing! I loved the Drive-in. Me, my sister and my brother used to all get into our pajamas while my mom would make a huge big brown grocery bag of popcorn and my dad would put the backseat down in our old faux wood-panel station wagon. Then we would bring our sleeping bags out to the car...hop in the back and go to the drive-in. I think half of the fun was being out and about in our pajamas. We usually fell asleep by the time the second feature started.
ReplyDeleteThe drive-in in Atlanta has gotten to be a social thing to do. We park our cars on two rows in a group so that we have all the space in between. Then fire up a grill and cook kebobs from Whole Foods, pass around cheese & crackers and have a nice bottle of wine. We even share and get to know the people around us. On Saturdays they use the space as a giant Flea Market, as well as have special events....recently there was a Madonna look-alike contest that coincided with her concert. Lots of fun!

SUCH a great idea. I'm half tempted to go out and buy my own projecter and doing a Astaire-Rogers guerilla movie night. Or maybe Grease.
ReplyDeleteWe have something called "Sunset on the Beach" here in Hawaii where they have live music and food booths and then when it gets dark they start up the movie right on the beach.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! There's a movement right up the road in West Chester, PA. I've never been to a drive-in movie. One was in my hometown but was torn down to build a Wal-Mart.

I went to my first drive-in two weekends ago... I saw Princess Diaries 2 and The Village. Near Newmarket, Ontario (Canada, near Toronto, sort of) there is a big drive-in theatre with three screens that each show two movies... you pay $12 CDN (about $9 US) and can watch two movies of your choice. It's cool.
ReplyDeleteI live in Wilkes-Barre, PA and we're forunate enough to have not one, but TWO drive-in theatres within 20 minutes of us. I took my boyfriend there last weekend and he was BEYOND excited since he had never been to a drive-in before. So much fun. They're surely one of the best things about summer.

This is probably close to an hour away from you, but I recommend the drive -
ReplyDeleteCharcoal Corral Drive-in. But it's a drive-in with more.. they have mini golf, arcade, a restaurant - a fun way to spend a summer evening.

Vintage drive in (www.vintagedrivein.com) is in Avon. It's less than 30 mins from Henrietta and it's pretty nice. There's a flea market there on sundays too!
