This weekend I watched an old John Wayne/Jimmy Stewart western with my parents called "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence". Afterwards, I was thinking about one of the character's nicknames, "Pompey", and was wondering where that came from. Some further reflection revealed that all the names in the movie were good ones... Liberty Valence, Ransom Stoddard, Dutton Peabody, Marshal Link Appleyard, Major Cassius Starbuckle... the screenwriters were on a roll that day.

Speaking of names, several people have asked if I am changing mine now that I am married. Yes, I am changing my last name to Aaron's. I can't quite part with my maiden name though, my sister and I are the last of the family line. So I am taking my last name as my middle name. So I am still LJC! I won't be switching to LJT. It just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Additionally, many people don't know that Aaron is actually Aaron's middle name. He never goes by his first name Mark. So he too is doing a name switcheroo. He is going to make Aaron his first name, and take my maiden name as his middle name! It might possibly be a pain to get this done, but it is something we really want to do.

  1. I move my-last to my-middle, too! It is awesome that Aaron will take your-last as his-middle! My husband offered to do the same, but his-middle is a family name and my-(old)last is monsterously long....

  2. Good idea. I wished I had kept my last name as my middle name. I didn't think about it until AFTER I had changed it. Now if I want to do it, it'll cost me because here you get so many days after a change in status to change your name then too bad. I know a girl who changed her entire name. Some people used to call her by her other name and she would just ignore them...

  3. Be very careful with the name change thing!! After Matt & I got married, I had no problem changing my name (I took my maiden name for my middle too) and Matt was going to take my maiden name for his middle name (sort of like hyphenating w/o the long last name). But for Matt, we've got to get a court order!! Otherwise, we can't get it changed on his passport (although they did it on his SS card before we found this out -- SUCH a mess!).

  4. I did the same thing, I went from ACT to ATM! I was bummed because they wouldn't let me keep my middle name, the social security office said you can only have three names on your card and that's what is considered to be legal.

    Any pics from the party?

  5. I have two middle names...my original middle name and my maiden name. Then I just tacked on my husband's last name, and I go by MyFirstName HisLastName officially.

I just couldn't part with my middle name, OR my maiden name. They're too much a part of me!

  6. P.S. That is so awesome and cool that Aaron will take your maiden name as his middle name! I don't think my husband would have done that, as his middle name is for his late father. But if that weren't the case, it would be cool!

  7. I too kept my last name as a middle name. It was too long for me to ask my husband to take it as his. Especially since he is named after his father who passed away when my husband was a little boy.

  8. That's a cool thing Aaron's doing, taking your name. Most of my family goes by their middle names too, since they were all named after ancestors.

I couldn't give up my maiden name either - it's a rare and very old Scottish name, plus only 4 letters! My husband's name is VERY common, like Smith. Since my first name is so common I decided to stay as I am. - Carolyn J.

  10. Pompey was the nickname that Lewis & Clark called Jean Baptiste Charbonneau (Sacagawea's son). See a picture of the national monument named after him here: http://www.mt.blm.gov/pillarmon/index.html I have *no* idea if that has any significance to the movie, but I knew the name.

p.s. I, too, kept my maiden name as my middle name, but I legally dropped my (birth) first name that no one but new teachers (Carole? My name is Jane and I'm here.) ever called me--why my parents did that is beyond me.......

  11. My sister and I are last of family liners too, so I also kept my last name as a second middle name. How fun that Aaron is taking your maiden name for his middle. Sweet!

  13. I kept my maiden name, and made it my second middle name. I tagged on my husband's last name, but I NEVER use it! It still seems so foreign.

So I have four names (and it's legal -- it is on my ss card). My kids have two middle names as well. Oh we blessed them with such long monikers!

  14. Wow! What a lot of name swapping! It's nice that both of you are taking on the other's name.

  15. I haven't seen "Liberty Valence" (although I like the old song!) so I'm not sure of the characteristics of the character "Pompey". I do know that the last century BC there was a guy in Rome named Pompey. He was a really big military leader, politician and friend of Julius Caesar. Maybe there's a connection. ~rebecca, your friendly ancient history fanatic

  16. I always thought using one's maiden name as a middle name was cool - My mom did it, for one. But my maiden name was Hoffmann & my married name is Mancuso & it looked & sounded terrible. So I kept my original middle name (Estelle!) & dropped the Hoffmann. Way to find a liberated dude willing to take your name. That's beautiful.

  17. Pompey is a nick name used to refer to the city of Portsmouth in the UK - don't think that really helps though!

  18. I don't think I'd be able to drop my maiden name either. I'm just so used to it. I'd be willing to drop my first name, though because I also never go by it. I think it's the sweetest thing that Aaron is willing to add your maiden name as his.
