Tina threw me the most amazing bridal shower today. I have never been to one before, much less for me, so I didn't know what to expect. She and her sister decorated the house so nicely and made dainty, tasty munchies (like fruit salsa... yum). The "theme" was spring flowers so the favors were little flower pots with bottles of lotion, tea bags and flowers inside, and there were little flower pots of dirt dessert with daisies sticking in them.

All my friends were there and I was so glad to see them. I learned a lot too. You're not supposed to break the ribbon on your gifts or it's bad luck. You're also not supposed to receive a knife as a gift or it creates tension in the friendship, so you give the gift giver a penny for it. You shouldn't hand your spouse a knife either. I told Aaron this and then kept testing him by trying to hand him the knife. Danica made a bouquet with the ribbons and I am to use it as a bouquet for the wedding rehearsal.

  1. Congratulations! It sounds like it was really lovely. I had never heard of the nice thing either.

  3. I was always told (and this was heavily enforced at both my bridal showers) that every ribbon you broke meant a baby that you would have in the future. I never heard that it was bad luck! Your shower sounds like fun!

  5. Were you surprised?

I never heard the myths about breaking ribbons or the knife. But my guests did make me a lovely hat out of a paper plate and all of the bows.

I hope you made out well, and am looking forward to pictures. See how needy you've made us all? ;)

  6. Oops. I meant to type "knife" instead of "nice" in my previous comment. I guess I was sleepy. Heh heh.

  7. That is soooo nice. What a nice friend. I heard a bride is not supposed to use scissors to cut any gifts.

  8. At my bridal shower a couple of weeks ago, they told me that the number of potholders you receive is how many kids you'll have. I got three. Not too bad, I guess. Although two of them were from my fiance's aunts, and she's the one who told me this. I think she's plotting something...

  9. How nice! I've never heard of these superstitions either and I've been to a few showers. Your shower wasn't like Phoebe's tea party on Friends, was it? I saw that the other day on TV. What a hoot! --Elaine

  11. I never heard of the knife supersition either, but the ribbon one I heard is the # you break is the # of kids you have. I broke two at mine. So far I have one so will see if it comes true.

  13. I've heard the knife one, but as a more general superstition that you are never supposed to give anyone you care about a knife, as it can "cut" the friendship.

And the breaking ribbons = number of babies one is the one I heard. (Though I suppose if one didn't want children, breaking ribbons might be seen as bad luck).

We did the ribbon bouquet thing at my sister in law's shower; she carried it as the bouquet at the wedding rehearsal as a stand-in for the real bouquet. (That's supposed to be good luck).

  14. I would love to hear more about your bridal shower. I just found out this weekend that my sister is engaged and I'm the MOH. The only bridal shower I've ever been to was my own, and it was nice but I had nothing to do with it. :^)
